When standing before the majestic beauty of the Halong Bay World Natural Heritage Site, many travelers often wonder which itinerary to choose for the most complete experience. To manage and promote the value of the Heritage, the Halong Bay Management Board has planned a total of 8 official sightseeing routes, each with its own character and tailored to distinct experiences. Among this system, Route 1 always maintains a classic position, serving as a foundational and indispensable choice, especially for a sightseeing duration limited to about 4 hours.
The creation of Route 1 is not accidental, but the result of a scientific planning process. After being honored by UNESCO, the number of visitors flocking to Halong surged, demanding a strict management model. Route 1 was built on the principle of “maximum impact in minimum time,” curating the most quintessentially iconic elements that made Halong famous. It is not an abbreviated version, but a journey “tailor-made” to tell the story of Halong in the most concise and effective way.
The core value of this journey lies in the uniqueness of its sightseeing spots. While other routes may take you to Sung Sot Cave for its vastness orTitop Island for swimming and mountain climbing, Route 1 offers a journey that touches the very “soul” of the heritage site. Visitors will explore a unique duo of caves: the magnificent, mystical Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Palace Cave), resembling an underground palace, and the ancient, serene Dau Go Cave (Wooden Stakes Cave), associated with the heroic historical tale of the Battle of Bach Dang River led by General Tran Hung Dao. Furthermore, this is the only route that brings you closest to iconic national symbols such as Fighting Cocks Islet (a symbol of Vietnamese tourism) and Incense Burner Islet (the sacred image featured on the 200,000 VND banknote).

Route 1 map – 4-hour Halong Bay cruise itinerary
The 4-hour itinerary of Route 1 is deliberately designed to effectively serve traveler segments with specific time and physical requirements. It is the perfect solution for those with tight schedules, such as international tourists on cross-country Vietnam tours with packed itineraries, passengers from international cruise ships docking for just a few hours, or MICE groups (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences & Events) looking to squeeze in a Halong Bay experience. Particularly, with its gentle schedule that does not require heavy physical exertion like mountain climbing, it is an ideal and safe choice for families with elderly members or young children, ensuring that every member can fully enjoy the trip.
Out of a total of over 3.1 million visitors who explored the bay by cruise boat in 2024, Route 1 served approximately 742,287 visitors (accounting for 23.07%). This impressive figure stems from the fact that Route 1 is an almost mandatory choice for key market segments that longer routes cannot accommodate, including all international cruise ship passengers, the majority of MICE groups, and a significant proportion of multi-generational families.

Choosing Route 1 does not mean you are experiencing less; rather, it means you are choosing a smart, efficient, and culturally rich journey—the most direct path to connecting with the legends and symbols that have made Halong Bay immortal.
Choosing the right vessel to explore Halong Bay is typically one of the most critical decisions, as it directly impacts your experience, schedule, and budget. There are currently various types of boats on the bay with different capacities and classes, each associated with a specific sightseeing route. To give you an overview, we can categorize them into 3 main groups.
1. 48-Seat Day Cruise Boats
First and most common is the 48-seat day cruise boat. This can be considered the familiar image and the “backbone” of day-tour tourism in Halong. Most budget-friendly joining tours utilize this type of vessel. Featuring a 2-deck design comprising a restaurant and a sundeck, they fully meet the basic needs for a trip. This type of boat is the mainstay, almost exclusively serving Route 1 (the 4-hour itinerary). Therefore, if you have a tight schedule and want to explore iconic highlights such as Thien Cung Cave and Fighting Cocks Islet, the 48-seat boat will be your primary choice. The onboard experience is communal, suitable for those who do not place a high demand on absolute privacy.

2. 72 & 99-Seat Day Cruisers
Next are the larger vessels with a capacity of 72 or 99 seats. This is an upgraded version, delivering a noticeably more spacious, sturdy, and comfortable feel. With airier restaurant and deck spaces, passengers have more room to move around and sightsee. However, an important point to note is that due to operating costs and the requirement for larger passenger numbers, this type of boat very rarely runs Route 1. Instead, they are the majority choice on Route 2 (the 6-8 hour itinerary), the most comprehensive sightseeing route featuring destinations such as Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) and Titop Island. This is the ideal vessel for first-time visitors who want to spend a full day on the bay with a balance of cost and comfort.

3. Private Yachts / Charters
When it comes to the luxury segment, the premier choice is chartering a private yacht. This form provides absolute privacy and exclusivity. Instead of joining a group tour, you charter an entire luxury yacht—typically with a capacity ranging from 10 to 30 guests—exclusively for your family or group. The greatest advantage is flexibility; you can request an itinerary following Route 1 or Route 2 and customize the schedule and menu to your liking within allowable frameworks. The staff and tour guide will cater exclusively to your group, delivering a high-class, personalized experience. This is the perfect choice for special occasions, families requiring private space, or corporate clients.
