Halong Bay is Quang Ninh’s most famous tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors every year. Over the years, the bay cruise market has developed rapidly in both quantity and quality. Currently, there are many options for visiting Halong Bay, which can be somewhat confusing for travelers, especially first-timers. Therefore, in this article, VDS Travel – a local travel agency with years of experience providing boat charters and organizing Halong Bay tours – will provide a detailed explanation of costs and tour itineraries for you.
You probably already know that to take a cruise in Halong Bay, you first need to know where the ticket-selling ports are located. From there, you can plan and choose the most convenient accommodation for your vacation. Or, for those who are not staying overnight in Halong and only visiting for a day trip, which port is the most suitable?
Currently, Halong has two international passenger cruise ports that are licensed and meet standards for anchoring and tourism operations. These are Tuan Chau International Marina and Halong International Cruise Port (Sun Port).
Sun Port (left) and Tuan Chau Marina (right)
Although ticket prices at both ports are the same, there are still a few minor differences. Below are some notes for travelers when deciding which area to choose for buying tickets and boarding a Halong Bay cruise.
Notes
Visitors to Halong Bay will incur two types of fees: Halong Bay sightseeing tickets by route and boat charter fees. Individual travelers can refer to section II below, while group travelers should take note of the following matters.
Halong Bay sightseeing tickets are traditional paper tickets that must be purchased before entering the port area. The ticket includes information such as: Tour route, fee amount, serial number, destinations, regulations, and the phone number of the Halong Bay Management Board.

Latest Halong Bay Sightseeing Ticket Sample
Previously, visitors could purchase tickets for individual sightseeing spots separately; however, nowadays, visitors must buy tickets by route. Currently, Halong Bay has 8 tour routes in total, among which Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, and 7 are designed for day-trip operations. However, day cruises currently mainly operate on Route 1 and Route 2. Although you can still visit the remaining routes by chartering a private boat, please contact us for detailed consultation.

In such cases, the total cost per member when chartering an entire boat is often significantly more optimal and competitive compared to buying individual tickets on shared boats.

Explore more options: Halong Bay 6-Hour Day Cruise
This is the premium tier of Halong Bay sightseeing tours, operated by luxury cruise ships renowned for their exceptional service quality. The highlight is typically a lavish Asian-European buffet featuring dozens of exquisite dishes, complemented by onboard entertainment such as live music performances or special events. However, travelers should keep a few details in mind. Regarding the itinerary, this tour type mainly focuses on the three most famous and iconic attractions: Sung Sot Cave, Titov Island, and Luon Cave. Restaurant cruises serving lunch or dinner have emerged as a rapidly growing and highly popular trend in Halong Bay’s cruise sector over the past few years. Unlike traditional sightseeing cruises, this type of service does not focus on venturing deep into the heritage core to explore famous caves or limestone islands. Instead, the primary focus of a restaurant cruise is to elevate the culinary experience, transforming an ordinary lunch or dinner into a flawless and memorable gastronomic event. The itineraries for these cruises typically involve gentle cruising along the coastline, offering diners the chance to admire Halong City sparkling with lights and the magical, romantic ambiance of Halong Bay at night.
Another distinctive highlight is the frequent hosting of entertainment events onboard, particularly top-tier live music shows throughout the journey. Notable examples include the “Love in the Bay” show by Ambassador II or the “Ocean Symphony” (Vũ điệu biển khơi) by Paradise Delight, which significantly enriches the guest experience. Because of these appealing features, many travelers now choose restaurant cruises as a wonderful alternative to dining at traditional onshore restaurants.

Important Notes
To ensure a complete and memorable trip to Halong Bay, travelers should keep in mind the following important tips when planning their experience in this world natural wonder.
1. Will I get seasick on a Halong Bay day boat or cruise?
One of the most common concerns for travelers planning to explore this world natural wonder is whether they will experience seasickness while cruising Halong Bay. The good news is that thanks to its unique geography featuring thousands of limestone karsts acting as giant natural wave breakers, Halong Bay is renowned for its relatively calm waters. This means that severe seasickness is actually uncommon for the vast majority of visitors here.
Under normal weather conditions, waves on the bay average only about 0.5 meters—very minor compared to open sea areas. Consequently, feedback from most travelers, even those who consider themselves prone to motion sickness, is that they feel completely fine or experience only very mild discomfort. Many even compare the smooth motion of the boat on the bay to gliding across a flat lake, especially when large cruises anchor overnight in wind-sheltered areas.
2. Should you choose Route 1 (3 – 4 hour tour) or Route 2 (6 – 8 hour tour) to visit Halong Bay?
Route 1, lasting about 3 to 4 hours, focuses on taking visitors to the most classic and accessible sights of the bay. The main highlights include exploring Thien Cung Cave (Heavenly Palace Cave) and Dau Go Cave (Wooden Stakes Cave), iconic formations like Fighting Cocks Islet and Incense Burner Islet, and a short kayaking/bamboo boat experience at Ba Hang. With a short travel time and gentle activities, Route 1 is particularly suitable for seniors, families with young children, travelers with limited time, or those who prefer not to do strenuous physical activities. This route accounts for over 20% of all bay visitors.

Meanwhile, Route 2 offers a distinct itinerary that ventures deep into the core heritage zone with unique destinations and activities, typically requiring 5 to 6 hours or more. The highlights include Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave)—the largest and most beautiful cave in Halong Bay—and notably Titov Island, featuring a beach and a summit viewpoint for panoramic views of Halong Bay from above, alongside kayaking or bamboo boating at Luon Cave. Due to its diverse and more engaging activities, Route 2 is better suited for active travelers, outdoor enthusiasts, groups of young friends, couples, or families in good health. This route also offers a wider selection of luxury cruises. It is the most popular choice, attracting an overwhelming majority of nearly three-quarters (about 73-74%) of all visitors to the bay.

3. Where can I store my luggage if I am carrying a lot of bags?
Many travelers arrive in Halong Bay early before hotel check-in time or have already checked out while carrying plenty of luggage. Managing your belongings conveniently is a common concern. Here are 3 options you can consider, tailored to current day-tour contexts in Halong:
Store Luggage at the Cruise Line’s Office/Counter: Some cruise operators have offices located right near the pier, so if you have luggage, you can drop it off comfortably at their office.
Bringing Luggage Onboard (Not Recommended): Day tour boats typically have very limited space with no dedicated luggage compartments like coaches or large ships. However, if you only have a small amount of luggage like 1-2 backpacks, you are welcome to bring them onboard easily.
Storing Luggage at the Port (Best Solution): This is usually the most convenient and effective way for day-tour travelers to handle their luggage. There is a small fee for this service, so be sure to inquire in advance.
4. Regulations on Permitted Items Onboard
According to official regulations by Halong City implemented on September 1, 2019, visitors are strictly prohibited from bringing single-use plastic products onto cruise boats. This rule aims to protect the Bay’s unique landscape and ecosystem from plastic waste pollution. Specific banned items include single-use plastic water bottles, plastic bags, plastic cups, plastic straws, and single-use plastic/styrofoam food containers. This is a mandatory environmental regulation applied to everyone visiting the Bay.

To comply with this regulation, please proactively prepare eco-friendly alternatives. Bringing a reusable personal water bottle (such as a thermos or metal flask) is the best choice, and many cruise boats now provide clean water refilling stations for your convenience. Instead of plastic bags, use cloth bags or personal backpacks to carry your belongings throughout the trip.
One important point to avoid confusion: alongside the environmental ban on plastics, many cruise lines—especially overnight cruises—have their own commercial policies regarding bringing outside food or beverages (especially wine, beer, and bottled/canned soft drinks, even if not made of plastic) onboard. This policy is designed to protect onboard sales revenue and is separate from the plastic ban. If brought along, you may be denied entry or asked to pay a corkage fee. Therefore, it is best to contact VDS Travel for detailed advice to avoid any unnecessary inconvenience.
In addition to following the regulations above, to ensure a comfortable and convenient trip, you should also prepare other essential personal items that are permitted. Below is a helpful checklist:
| Item Category | Notes / Purpose |
|---|---|
| Reusable personal water bottle | For drinking water, complying with the plastic bottle ban. |
| Cloth bags / Backpacks | To carry personal belongings as an alternative to plastic bags. |
| Sun protection gear | High-SPF sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses to protect skin and eyes. |
| Suitable footwear | Sneakers/walking shoes (for cave exploration), sandals/slippers (for walking onboard). |
| Swimwear | If your tour itinerary includes swimming or kayaking activities. |
| Camera / Smartphone | To capture wonderful moments (consider a waterproof pouch if needed). |
| Personal medications | Motion sickness pills, basic medicine (headache, stomachache), prescription medications. |
| Identification documents | Mandatory: Valid ID card or Passport for cruise check-in procedures. |
