Each year, shipyards from around the globe push the boundaries of private superyacht design to deliver ever-larger and more magnificent vessels. While the Samuda-built El Mahrousa may have held an unchallenged title for 119 years, the 21st century has gracefully made way for even grander and more expansive yachts. German shipbuilder Lürssen currently holds a near-monopoly on the construction of Giga-yachts, having delivered 13 of the world’s top 25 vessels. Yet, this list remains ever-evolving, with the 158-meter Blue entering the top 5 in 2022. Each of these magnificent vessels exceeds 100 meters in length, commanding attention not merely for their sheer scale, but for the extraordinary amenities housed both above and below deck. From private submersibles and helicopters to swimming pools, cinemas, and scientific laboratories, the onboard features of these superyachts represent true milestones in engineering excellence. Below is our curated ranking of the world’s largest private yachts.

1. Azzam | 180.6m

In October 2013, Lürssen delivered the world’s largest privately owned superyacht, Azzam. Originally envisioned at 145 meters, the design was optimized to an impressive 180 meters. Other staggering statistics of Azzam’s magnificent design include an astonishing 13,000 GT and luxurious accommodations for 36 guests and 80 crew members. This majestic behemoth was reportedly commissioned for Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan of the Abu Dhabi royal family, intended as a luxurious day-vessel for excursions to his favorite diving spots. The main saloon alone spans nearly 522m² and features a sophisticated French Empire style crafted by designer Christophe Leoni. Onboard amenities include a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a swimming pool, and a specialized golf training room.

The exterior was masterfully penned by Nauta Yacht Design, with engineering direction overseen by Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi on behalf of the owner. Despite its immense proportions, the yacht achieves remarkable speeds thanks to an innovative water-jet propulsion system (comprising two fixed and two directional jets), propelling her at an impressive velocity of over 31.5 knots. Surpassing Roman Abramovich’s Eclipse by over 17.5 meters, this magnificent vessel claimed the crown as the world’s largest yacht. The pristine all-white superyacht held an unchallenged reign for nearly seven years, though this era concludes with the anticipated launch of the 183-meter REV.

2. Eclipse | 162.5m

Following five years of intensive design, development, and construction, Eclipse departed the Blohm + Voss shipyard in December 2010. She held the prestigious title of the world’s largest superyacht for three years before being surpassed by Azzam. Managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse features a sophisticated diesel-electric propulsion system with generators powering rotating Azipod drives, striking exterior styling, and breathtaking interior design by London-based Terence Disdale Design. Disdale oversaw every facet of aesthetic design and spatial layout, encompassing superstructure architecture, deck arrangements, interior styling, and construction supervision. Eclipse was honored as Motor Yacht of the Year at the 2011 World Superyacht Awards and Motor Yacht of the Decade at the 10th World Superyacht Awards in 2015.

Her accommodations feature a 56-meter owner’s deck and comprehensive facilities for up to 92 crew members. The opulent interior proudly showcases hundreds of custom-crafted finishes developed exclusively for this project, while the expansive deck areas include a 16-meter swimming pool that seamlessly transforms into a dance floor. The yacht is also equipped to accommodate three helicopters—one on each of her two helipads and a third housed securely within a foredeck hangar.

3. Dubai | 162m

Dubai was originally commissioned by Prince Jefri of Brunei, featuring exterior styling and interior concepts by Andrew Winch. The Blohm & Voss project was suspended in 1998 when only the bare hull and partially completed superstructure remained. The vessel was eventually acquired by the government of Dubai, with project management entrusted to Kostis Antonopoulos of Platinum Yachts, who curated a stunning new interior design completed in 2006.

Fittingly named, Dubai serves as the royal yacht of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum of Dubai. Accommodations, styled by Nakheel Interiors, are tailored for 24 guests and comprise an opulent owner’s suite, five VIP suites, and six guest suites, all featuring private open balconies. Exceptional amenities include a magnificent 21.3-meter mosaic atrium, a swimming pool, barbecue areas, a cinema, a disco, a dedicated landing pad for a Blackhawk helicopter, a fully equipped gymnasium, a garage housing the yacht’s private submarine, and an array of exhilarating water toys. Full certification was granted by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping in October 2006, and she has since embarked on numerous voyages, capable of achieving a top speed of 25 knots.

4. Blue | 158m

Claiming the 4th position among the world’s largest private yachts, Lürssen’s magnificent Blue is so voluminous that she surpasses several longer vessels in terms of gross tonnage. Built for a distinguished Middle Eastern owner, her interior spatial volume is exceeded only by the colossal Dilbar (15,917 GT) and Al Said (15,850 GT). Terence Disdale penned the classic exterior lines, characterized by a flared bow and graceful curves leading toward the deep overhangs of the decks. The primary helipad is positioned gracefully on the foredeck, complemented by a secondary, more intimate landing area aft. Additional exterior highlights include a shaded swimming pool on the main aft deck, an expansive swim platform at the transom, and double balconies flanking the forward owner’s suite. The interior of Blue is designed with a timeless aesthetic and rich “feminine elegance,” serving as a deliberate and sophisticated contrast to her robust exterior.
Blue
Blue is propelled by an advanced hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system developed entirely in-house. An electric Azimuth drive can propel the vessel independently or operate in tandem with dual propeller shafts. To minimize noise, vibration, and NOx emissions, Blue is fitted with a state-of-the-art exhaust gas after-treatment system. Furthermore, the vessel incorporates cutting-edge membrane filtration technology, ensuring that her treated wastewater achieves pristine drinking-water quality.

5. Dilbar | 156m

Boasting a total internal volume exceeding 15,000 GT, Dilbar stands as the world’s largest yacht by gross tonnage, excluding length considerations. Constructed from steel and aluminum by Lürssen to a design by Espen Øino, she was delivered to the Mediterranean in 2016 for her owner, Uzbek billionaire Alisher Usmanov. She succeeded Usmanov’s previous yacht of the same name, which was subsequently renamed Ona. She is frequently spotted cruising the stunning coastlines of the South of France, northern Spain, and occasionally Cyprus.

Record-breaking features aboard this SOLAS-compliant superyacht include a massive 180-cubic-meter swimming pool and a powerful 30,000 kW diesel power plant. Her exquisite interior, meticulously crafted by Winch Design, accommodates up to 24 guests attended by a dedicated crew of nearly 100 professionals. Additionally, she features dual helipads, 3,800 square meters of luxurious living space, and an expansive botanical garden complete with specialized grass varieties engineered to withstand marine salt air, according to creator Axel Massmann. Dilbar is finished in a distinctive, uniform pale-cream exterior hue that makes her instantly recognizable upon the open sea, with a maximum cruising speed of 21 knots.
