History and Origin of the Name Tuan Chau

In the past, Tuan Chau Island was merely a pristine wilderness with boundless green forests and sweeping white-sand beaches. The islanders’ livelihoods depended primarily on fishing and small-scale farming. In 1959, President Ho Chi Minh visited the island and envisioned transforming Tuan Chau into a “gem” of Vietnam’s tourism. However, it was not until the late 1990s that Tuan Chau truly embarked on a dramatic phase of development, closely tied to the visionary entrepreneur Dao Hong Tuyen, widely celebrated as the “father” of this resort destination.

Recognizing the immense potential of the untouched island, Mr. Dao Hong Tuyen was determined to invest in its development despite facing numerous hardships and challenges. In 1997, under his leadership, Au Lac Co., Ltd. (Tuan Chau Group) broke ground on the road linking Tuan Chau Island to the mainland. This was an exceptionally ambitious undertaking, yet after 13 months of rigorous construction, the 2,145-meter roadway was completed, marking a pivotal turning point for the island’s prosperity.

Since then, serving as Chairman of Tuan Chau Group, Mr. Dao Hong Tuyen has continued to spearhead and oversee investment, construction, and commercial operations on the island. The group has funneled trillions of VND into building world-class infrastructure and tourism services, successfully transforming Tuan Chau Island into the modern, alluring destination it is today.
