An Introduction to Cai Bau Pagoda

Cai Bau Pagoda, also known as Truc Lam Giac Tam Zen Monastery, is situated on a hillside overlooking the tranquil waters of Bai Tu Long Bay, near the Bai Dai tourist area (Van Don District). The pagoda was rebuilt upon the foundations of the ancient Phuc Linh Tu, a 700-year-old temple dating back to the Tran Dynasty. The site is also historically significant as the location of the initial skirmishes during the legendary Bach Dang campaign of 1288.

Over the centuries, the original structure suffered from the ravages of time and history, leaving only remnants behind. In the 1990s, restoration efforts began, though they remained modest and lacked a formal master plan. It was not until 2007 that construction of the current Cai Bau Pagoda began, spanning an area of 20 hectares with a total investment of 24 billion VND raised through socialized funding. Inaugurated in 2009, the pagoda—with its back against the mountains and facing the open sea—is widely considered by travelers to occupy one of the most stunning locations in Vietnam.

The architecture follows traditional Vietnamese Buddhist design, featuring a two-story main hall spanning 6,000m2, a three-arched gateway, ancestral halls, a bell tower, monk residences, guest quarters, an abbot’s retreat, meditation halls, and display areas. Most impressively, a 50-meter-high Buddha statue stands atop the mountain behind the Zen Monastery. The main hall houses a majestic Shakyamuni Buddha statue set against a bronze relief, flanked by Manjushri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, representing wisdom and compassion, respectively.

The design, layout, reliefs, and stairways reflect the classic elegance of many Vietnamese pagodas. Cai Bau consists of the expansive 6,000m2 main hall, a two-tiered roofed entrance gate, ancestral halls, bell tower, and comprehensive facilities for monks and visitors. The grandeur is anchored by the 50m Buddha statue towering over the monastery. In the main hall, the Shakyamuni Buddha remains the centerpiece, beautifully accentuated by the surrounding bronze artistry.
