Introduction to Tra Ban – Ban Sen Island

Tra Ban Island is located in the southeastern part of the Van Hai archipelago, within the Bai Tu Long Bay. The island covers approximately 141km², with an estimated land area of 72km² (which varies based on tidal cycles), while the remainder consists of water surface and limestone islets. The administrative unit here is Ban Sen Commune, which serves as the main residential area. However, economic conditions have historically been challenging; the island only received electricity in 2015 and a solid concrete cross-island road in 2021. Ban Sen Commune comprises 3 villages with 300 households and over 1,200 residents, whose livelihoods primarily revolve around aquaculture, fishing, and cultivating local specialties such as Ban Sen oranges and Van tea. According to local lore, the residents here trace their ancestry back to the Tran Dynasty, when some fled to the island to escape the Mongol invaders and remained to build their lives.

Nha Tro Cave is not only a natural wonder but also a significant archaeological site. Excavations have revealed traces of ancient life, including seashells, sandstone, Cai Beo pottery, and stone axes. Archaeologists believe Nha Tro Cave is a tributary of the Hoa Binh culture—an ancient Stone Age civilization in Vietnam. The discovery of Nha Tro Cave provides solid evidence that illuminates the origin and undeniable continuity of the Ha Long culture, which emerged during the Paleolithic era and persisted through the Neolithic period of the Hoa Binh culture, dating back approximately 20,000 to 5,000 years ago.
