Ha Long Bay is an extraordinary natural heritage of the world, not only preserving pivotal milestones in the Earth’s geological evolution but also standing as a masterpiece of nature adorned with thousands of majestic limestone islands of diverse shapes and a magnificent, mystical cave system. Among the breathtaking caverns within this heritage region, Thien Cung Cave rightfully reigns as one of the grandest and most exquisite caves, captivating the fascination of discerning travelers worldwide.

Introduction to Thien Cung Cave

Nestled in the southwest of Ha Long Bay, on Dau Go Island – one of the largest islands boasting the most alluring caves in the bay, Thien Cung Cave is located approximately 4 kilometers south of the tourist boat harbor and a mere 100 meters north of Dau Go Cave. Spanning a vast area of up to 10,000 m2, with a length of 130 meters, a width of 50 meters, and situated 25 meters above sea level, Thien Cung Cave offers visitors an exceptionally majestic and grand ambiance.

Thien Cung Cave is one of two caverns discovered on Dau Go Island back in 1901 by a French exploratory expedition, only to be subsequently forgotten. It was not until 1993 that the cave was rediscovered by a local fisherman residing in Ha Long. Since 1996, the Ha Long Bay Management Board has undertaken restoration, preservation, walkway construction, and lighting systems, officially opening it to international tourists. Inside the cave, the shimmering, luminous, and ethereal white stalactite system resembles a lavish, magnificent imperial palace. The name “Thien Cung” (meaning the Heavenly Palace) originates from this very sublime beauty. Upon arrival, travelers will feel as though they are wandering into a fairy-tale realm, letting their imaginations drift along the vivid formations carved into the rock walls. Every visit brings novel sensations, inspiring endless exploration and discovery. It is precisely for this reason that ancient locals wove the legendary tale of the Dragon King and Cloud Princess, infusing this wondrous realm with vibrant life.

The Legend of Thien Cung Cave

According to legend, the Dragon King was the one who aided the people in vanquishing invaders and safeguarding this land. Following their victory, the Dragon King did not return to the heavens but chose to remain in his cave. That year, a prolonged drought struck, plunging the populace into hardship due to crop failures. They implored the Dragon King to conjure rain and save them. Yet, no matter how many people went searching for the Dragon King, none ever returned.

Only a young couple dared to brave hardships and dangers to set out in search of the Dragon King. They fortunately returned and subsequently gave birth to a remarkably beautiful daughter named May (Cloud). As May grew, she caught the attention of the Dragon Prince (the Dragon King’s son). The Dragon Prince fell in love with May at first sight and wished to take her as his bride.

Their wedding celebration was lavishly held for 7 days and 7 nights within the central chamber of the cave. To celebrate the nuptials, flying dragons materialized and vanished amidst the stalactite cloud forests, baby elephants hoisted one another in joyful dance, colossal pythons slithered around ancient banyan trees, twin stone lions danced with their manes fluttering in the air, and towering eagles spread their massive wings high above. A grand, intricately adorned elephant lay in repose, awaiting the arrival of the bride and groom. The silver-haired deities of the North and South Stars also graced the joyous banquet, creating an atmosphere of vibrant and jubilant festivity.”

Today, when travelers visit Thien Cung Cave, they are regaled with the romantic love story of Princess May and the Dragon Prince, while also marveling at breathtaking natural art forms sculpted by the harmonious combination of water, stone, and light. Thien Cung Cave is an unmissable destination during your exploration of Ha Long Bay.

Exploring Thien Cung Cave

Upon arriving at Dau Go Island, to enter Thien Cung Cave, visitors must ascend a slope approximately 25 meters high. The ascent is relatively straightforward as the entrance area has been thoughtfully upgraded and paved with stone and cement. Consequently, visitors can easily reach the cave entrance; however, because the initial 10-meter stretch of the entrance is somewhat challenging to navigate, guests with mobility impairments who rely on wheelchairs cannot use them to enter the cave directly. Assistance is required to carry the wheelchair into the cavern. Once inside, however, wheelchairs can be used with complete ease, as the interior has been suitably renovated for wheelchair accessibility.

Thien Cung Cave spans a length of approximately 130 meters with a relatively complex structure featuring tiered layers of stalactite partitions. Its shapes are exceptionally unique and striking. Combined with vibrant colored lighting, this creates an ethereal, surreal landscape reminiscent of a paradise realm. The cave comprises three main chambers, each bearing its own distinct style and characteristic beauty.

1. The First Chamber
In the first chamber, visitors can easily observe two stalagmite formations mirroring the shapes of two iconic creatures from Vietnam’s sacred quartet (Dragon, Lunicorn, Tortoise, and Phoenix): one formation resembles a majestic Phoenix spreading its wings, yearning to soar into the sky, while right beside it stands a stalactite shaped like a dragon’s head, evoking the eternal pairing of the dragon and phoenix.

At the resting point between the first and second chambers, guests will encounter two towering, sturdy stone pillars standing resiliently like a grand open gateway. In summer, around 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM, sunlight streams through the opening, refracting and blending with the cave’s natural humidity to create a misty, ethereal veil. This spot is affectionately known as the “Heaven’s Gate.” Visitors often jest that to enter the central chamber—the main palace—one must always pass through this gate to proceed further inside.

2. The Second Chamber (The Central Cave) – The Most Exquisite Area of Thien Cung Cave

The second chamber is the widest and most stunning section within Thien Cung Cave, featuring an expansive space boasting both impressive height and breadth. Notably, the stalactite system here exhibits a remarkably natural, bright white hue. Enhanced by the lighting system, they blend seamlessly to craft an otherworldly spectacle. It is precisely for this reason that this second chamber is dubbed the “Heavenly Palace.”

Inside the cavern, four massive, well-proportioned stone pillars stand firmly at the four corners, as if supporting the vast vaulted ceiling. From base to peak, these pillars are etched with intricate embossed motifs depicting birds, fish, human daily activities, and flora, cultivating a magical tableau. On the northern cave wall, the striking image of a young couple holding hands stands out, as enchanting as a fairy tale. They appear overflowing with emotion after long days apart, finally reunited. Nearby, a troupe of fairy maidens dances and sings to celebrate the wedding, injecting dynamic life into the surroundings. High above, beneath the cave vault, clusters of stalactites drape downward like a magnificent stone curtain, engendering a poetic ambiance.

Particularly throughout your tour of the cave’s central chamber, you will experience the sensation of hearing drums echoing from ancient wedding festivities. In reality, this is merely the sound of wind whispering through the rocks, yet it holds a strangely captivating and hypnotic allure. The second chamber is also one of the premier spots favored for check-in photography.

3. The Third Chamber: Ethereal and Magical Celestial Scenery

The third chamber is the final section of Thien Cung Cave. Legend has it that in ancient times, Mother Au Co gave birth to a hundred eggs that hatched into a hundred children; 50 children followed their mother to the mountains, while 50 followed their father to the sea. Here lies a stalactite masterpiece symbolizing Mother Au Co’s maternal love—namely, the image of the “fairy breast,” also referred to as the “mother’s milk gland.” Could this be a precious keepsake entrusted by Mother Au Co to her 50 children who ventured to the sea with their father?
