More than 60 years ago, President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov visited the Hong Quang region, now Quang Ninh Province. He named an island in Halong Bay after this heroic cosmonaut. Introduction to Titov Island

Titov Island, often phonetically pronounced as Titop, is a pristine little island nestled within Halong Bay, approximately 14 kilometers southeast of the Halong International Cruise Port. Spanning a mere 3.7 hectares (0.037 km²), the island rests with its back against Cửa Lục Bay, while facing the magnificent Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave on Bo Hon Island. Today, it stands as one of the most enthralling stops along Route 2 of the Halong Bay heritage tour.

The name “Titov” originates from the historic visit of Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov on January 22, 1962, at the invitation of President Ho Chi Minh. Previously, the island was known as “Hong Thap Tu” (Red Cross) or “Nghia Dia” (Cemetery), reflecting a tragic 1905 incident when a French cargo ship tragically sank off the coast of Halong Bay due to a lack of a seasoned pilot, and the unfortunate sailors were laid to rest on the island. On a late 19th-century French map of Halong Bay, it was also referred to as “Cat Nang”. Today, the name “Titov” has become its official designation, serving as a lasting tribute to the legendary cosmonaut.

The Historic Visit of Cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov to Halong Bay

On August 6, 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov (September 11, 1935 – September 20, 2000) piloted the Vostok 2 spacecraft, orbiting the Earth 17 times and covering a distance of 700,000 kilometers. To commemorate this monumental achievement, in January 1962, responding to an invitation from the Central Committee and the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, as well as President Ho Chi Minh, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the Soviet Government warmly accepted the delegation for Comrade Gherman Stepanovich Titov to visit Vietnam.

On the crisp morning of January 22, 1962, President Ho Chi Minh and Comrade Titov cruised through Halong Bay aboard a naval vessel. As they navigated past the majestic limestone karsts and grottoes around noon amid a biting winter chill, the boat approached a small island graced with a pristine white sandy shore. President Ho instructed the crew to anchor so everyone could step ashore for a visit. At that time, locals affectionately called the island “Cat Nang”. After touring the island, President Ho turned to a local official (some accounts note a naval officer) and asked for the island’s name, then proposed naming it Titov Island (adapted as Titop in Vietnamese pronunciation) to honor the Soviet cosmonaut’s historic visit. Since then, the island has embodied the profound Vietnam-Soviet friendship of the past and the enduring Vietnam-Russian Federation partnership of today, remaining a cherished landmark within the world natural heritage wonder of Halong Bay.

Driven by a shared desire to nurture this precious, traditional friendship between Vietnam and the Russian Federation, Quang Ninh Province collaborated with the Vietnam-Russia Friendship Association in March 2013 to erect a monument dedicated to Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Stepanovich Titov on Titov Island. Crafted from green stone, the nearly 6-meter-tall bust monument weighs over 26 tons and spans an area of 106m2. It is accompanied by a 3-ton stone plaque inscribed in three languages—Vietnamese, Russian, and English—reading: “During his visit to Halong on January 22, 1962, President Ho Chi Minh and Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov stopped at this island. To express friendship with the Soviet people and affection for the hero, President Ho Chi Minh named this island Titov Island.” The monument project, valued at approximately 7 billion VND, was realized through generous contributions from numerous organizations and individuals in both Vietnam and Russia.

.1 Swimming

Since 2007, through the dedication of local authorities, the beach has been meticulously upgraded to cater to travelers, featuring two freshwater shower facilities equipped with secure lockers, modern public restrooms meeting Vietnam National Administration of Tourism standards, and a sophisticated waste collection and treatment system aligned with national environmental regulations. Currently, Titov Beach remains the only authorized swimming beach operating in Halong Bay following the temporary closure of Soi Sim Beach in 2019. Consequently, congestion can occasionally occur during peak hours when Route 2 visitors flock to the island for a swim. Travelers—especially during peak summer weekends between 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM—are advised to consider whether they wish to partake in swimming during these peak windows.

2. Mountain Trekking

Beyond swimming, visitors to Titov Island can embark on an invigorating mountain trek. As the signage can be relatively discreet and subtle, guests are encouraged to consult on-site staff for clear directions. The trek involves climbing approximately 450 stone steps to reach the observation deck perched atop the 110-meter (360 ft) peak. Because the ascent is quite steep, individuals with physical limitations or improper footwear should carefully evaluate their readiness before participating. The rewarding panorama at the summit, however, is well worth the effort: a sweeping, boundless, and majestic vista of Halong Bay unfurls before your eyes.
