Ngoc Vung Island — also known as the “Pearl Island”—earns its name from ancient legends claiming that the area was once home to rare, precious pearls that illuminated the night sky. Blessed by nature, the island is home to Truong Chinh Beach, widely regarded as the most beautiful stretch of sand in Northern Vietnam. Beyond its pristine shores, Ngoc Vung captivates visitors with Cau Lau Lake, a vital irrigation project that has transformed into a stunning landmark for the island commune.

Cau Lau Lake
Cau Lau Lake is a natural freshwater reservoir nestled in the heart of the island—a project that serves as a cornerstone for the socio-economic development of the soldiers and residents of Ngoc Vung. Constructed in 2003, the 9.1-hectare reservoir was designed to provide essential water for the island’s growth, supplying drinking water to 200 households and supporting the Ngoc Thuy Lake in irrigating 26.5 hectares of rice paddies. In 2012, a second phase of development saw the construction of a water treatment plant and supporting infrastructure, including a pipeline system spanning over 7 kilometers. What makes Cau Lau Lake truly extraordinary is its self-sustaining nature; it never runs dry, supported by a remarkably unique ecosystem.
According to Mr. Phan Thanh Khao, a land administration officer for Ngoc Vung, the area was once a sprawling rice field nestled against natural forests, fed by various mountain streams, prior to 2002. Recognizing the local need for a reliable water source, the government surveyed the area and developed the lake as it stands today. Even during the dry season without rainfall, the reservoir maintains a significant volume of water thanks to the surrounding forests, which channel water from upland streams into the basin. Compared to other island communes in Quang Ninh province, such a large, pristine natural freshwater lake is a rare advantage; in many other regions, securing a consistent water supply remains a significant challenge. For the people and military on the island, this lake is truly a gift from nature.
With its poetic beauty, Cau Lau Lake has evolved into a compelling destination for travelers over the years. When viewed from above, the lake is framed by undulating mountains, predominantly covered in primary forests rich with rare medicinal plants. Nearly two decades later, Cau Lau Lake remains a vital lifeline for Ngoc Vung’s economic progress, especially as the island pivots toward sustainable tourism. Given its breathtaking landscape, Cau Lau Lake is an unmissable destination for anyone visiting the beautiful Ngoc Vung Island.
