The total natural land area of the district is 551.3 km², encompassing over 600 islands of varying sizes. Van Don

Tracing the golden pages of Van Don’s history reveals a legacy of remarkable events and achievements that underscore the significant growth of this region. It was once a bustling trading port, recognized as a major and essential commercial center of Vietnam from the mid-12th to the late 18th century. In 1288, on the historic Bach Dang River, under the command of General Tran Khanh Du, the military and people of Van Don decisively defeated the supply fleet of the Yuan-Mongol invaders, securing the illustrious Van Don victory. During the struggle against the French, the people of Van Don remained steadfast in their commitment to the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, achieving numerous victories in the quest to expel the colonialists. Throughout the resistance against the US, Van Don effectively implemented patriotic emulation movements, serving as a solid rear base that provided vital human and material resources to the southern battlefield, while simultaneously maintaining production and military coordination. The district’s military and civilians shot down 37 aircraft of various types and captured many American pilots, including the 200th American plane downed in the skies of Quang Ninh province, contributing to the historic victory that led to the total liberation of the South and the unification of the country.

In recent years, Van Don’s infrastructure has been synchronously developed through key transportation projects, providing the momentum to transform the face of this economically promising island district. In 2005, the Van Don Bridge was completed and put into operation, connecting the island district to the mainland. In December 2018, the Van Don International Airport, with a total investment of 7.463 trillion VND, commenced operations, significantly shortening travel time between Van Don and major cities in Vietnam and across the globe. Beyond serving domestic and international travelers, Van Don International Airport serves as a powerful catalyst for trade and socioeconomic development for the district, the province, and the entire northeastern region of the country. Another factor contributing to Van Don’s sustainable development is the Ha Long – Mong Cai expressway. Spanning a total length of 176km and inaugurated in early September 2022, it has reduced travel time between Ha Long and Van Don from 90 minutes to 50 minutes, and from Mong Cai to Van Don from 2 hours to just 50 minutes. Most notably, the Ha Long – Mong Cai expressway has created a seamless traffic artery from Hanoi to Van Don, cutting travel time from 5 hours down to 2 hours and 30 minutes. With a developed transportation system encompassing aviation, road, and sea ports integrated with logistics services—such as the high-end Ao Tien port, which covers nearly 30 hectares with a total investment of 613 billion VND—Van Don takes pride in possessing the most synchronized and modern maritime, road, and aviation infrastructure in the country.

To foster this core economic sector, Van Don has actively sought investment for major tourism projects, such as the high-end complex park with a casino, the Sonasea resort complex, and numerous other tourism developments that contribute to the collective growth of Van Don’s tourism industry.

Sa Sung (Sipunculus nudus)

Sa Sung, often referred to as the “soft gold” of the Quang Ninh coast, is a rare and precious marine delicacy. Resembling an earthworm with a soft, reddish-brown body measuring approximately 5–10 cm in length, these creatures dwell deep within sandy burrows on the seafloor, exposed by the ebbing tides. Harvesting them requires immense patience and skill, as locals must wait for the low tide and use specialized tools to dig deep into the sand.

Tu Hai (Geoduck)

Tu Hai, also known as geoduck, is a bivalve mollusk that thrives in warm, saline waters. This seafood is highly valued for its nutritional profile and succulent, savory flavor, particularly the varieties found in Van Don, Quang Ninh. A geoduck is characterized by its oval-shaped, hard shell, typically brownish-yellow in color. Its most distinctive feature is its long “siphon,” which extends outside the shell to filter water and nutrients.

The favorable natural conditions of the Van Don waters—characterized by clean water and an abundant food source—create the perfect environment for squid to thrive. The local catch consists primarily of squid living in deep, calm waters, which imparts a notably richer, sweeter flavor to the meat.
